The unique habitat of Adenium crispum in the coastal regions of southern Somalia has shaped its distinct characteristics. As a plant that has not yet been formally recognized as a full species, it is currently classified as A. somalense var. crispum Chiov.
In its natural environment, Adenium crispum develops a fusiform caudex, which is an enlarged, bulbous structure that stores water and nutrients. This caudex remains underground, providing stability and protection to the plant against harsh coastal conditions. Interestingly, most of the root system emerges from near the top of this caudex, allowing it to efficiently absorb nutrients from the sandy soil.
However, when cultivated outside its natural habitat, Adenium crispum exhibits some intriguing adaptations. The caudex is deliberately raised above the soil level to promote better air circulation and prevent potential rotting issues caused by excessive moisture.
